WTH Happened?? How did we get here?

This week I started a pilot of a new wellness program I've been developing.  While this new program is specifically for Mom's today at our first educational meeting I went over some topics that are very applicable to everyone.  This is the video of the first few minutes of the meeting.  Enjoy!

Everyone has one...

The double edged sword of technology.  Take a moment and think about all the advances that have been made in the last 20 years, cell phones became smart phones, computer labs gave way to home computers then the internet allowed an explosion of information and networking.  It seems that the common theme of this technology race is making our lives ‘easier’ and in some ways I guess that is true.  It is much easier to just call someone from our smart phones then having to stop and use a pay phone or waiting until we get home to make a call (for those of you under 20, yes we actually used to have to do this).  And now you can use an ‘app’ to order your fast food before you arrive, so I guess this makes things a little easier.  But in other ways, technology has led to a significant shift in complexity, take for example our vehicles.  I still remember the auto shop at our high school where guys (and a few gals) would learn how to rebuild engines and tune up cars.  The good mechanics back then could listen to a car running and figure out the origin of the strange noise or problem.  It used to be you could learn from a mentor and then with time and experience become a good mechanic.  But, have you taken a car in lately?  The first thing they do now is to hook it up to a computer and start working through all the various sensors and computer systems.  It seems that the actual mechanical functioning of the engine or transmission are way down the ladder of complexity.  Our vehicles have become so complex that if the computer can’t figure out what’s wrong then there is confusion and a need to run more tests.  The days of a friend or relative fixing your car is quickly becoming a thing of the past due to this increased complexity.

It seems that the same is true for almost every other machine or device we work with TVs, Computers, DVR’s, even copy machines.  We’ve gotten to the age of relying on technology but then when something goes wrong we are stuck, you have to find someone to try and fix it, but it won’t be a friend or relative and even if you do find someone it seems the standard answer now is… “It’s not worth repairing, just throw it away and get a new one.”  So, what started out to make our lives easier, actually has the exact opposite effect by making it so complex that we have lost the ability to ‘fix’ anything and the answer becomes just to discard it and start over?  It seems we have accepted this reality for a majority of the machines we work with.  But, what if it’s a machine that we simply can’t throw away?  And, to make matters worse this machine is so complex that even after thousands of years and millions of articles and theories from some of the top thinkers we are still learning about the functioning of the machine and the interaction of all its parts?  What then?  Who do we turn to?  The one thing we’ve learned about these complex machines is that they are expensive to fix so the more careful we are with them the better the chance of extending their lives.  Just break the glass on the iPhone and this will become painfully obvious.  If you want to destroy your new car quickly just put in the wrong fuel, don’t replace the oil or do any maintenance just drive it hard until it breaks down.

Unfortunately, this is exactly how we treat the most precious machine any of us have, our bodies.  We know that there is a way to improve the longevity of the machine through some simple rules but too many people choose to ignore them.  We wait until the machine starts to break down and then we are willing to listen to all kinds of advice on how to get it working again.  “You need a new paint job!  I know this guy.”  “What you need is a new set of custom tires and rims.  I know this gal.”  “Just run some jet fuel through it for the next 7 days and it will clean it right up.”  It amazes me that we are willing to experiment with the most precious, one of a kind and irreplaceable machine we have.  If any of the advice you receive sounds too good to be true, guess what, it is.  We might not have the whole human body figured out yet but we have learned a lot.  The funny part is that even though the human body is incredibly complex there are some simply things that can really help.  It needs fuel to operate, the better the fuel you put in the better it works.  The fuel our bodies prefer is fruits and vegetables, lean meats and grains, the more natural the better.  Our bodies are made to move but like all machines if you push them to hard they will break down.  They need a rest period so they can recharge (this is called sleep and you need 6.5 to 8 hours/day).  It is also important to rest the main computer (our brain) to allow it time free of all the distractions of modern technology.  A little routine maintenance can go a long way.  Before you get the new paint job, supercharged fuel, or chase the latest fad, start with the basics.  If you need a tune up, then make sure you check into the ‘expert’ before turning over the keys.  There are a lot of ‘certifications’ out there for personal trainers and coaches everything from a weekend course to college degrees and advanced degrees.  Be careful out there…

Are you suffering from CRS? Only you can help stop it...

There is a growing epidemic in America, no not Obesity (although that is still a growing problem-literally).  This new epidemic is a spin off of the 'Age of Distraction' and it's called CRS, Can't Remember Stuff (or the adult term $H!T).  What are the signs and symptoms of this insidious epidemic?  Here are a few key questions:
  1. Do you often walk into a room, only to realize you have no idea what you walked into the room for?
  2. Do you open the fridge only to stand there mindlessly trying to remember what you were going to get out?
  3. Do start to look up some information for work only to realize you've just spent 30 minutes watching the latest video of baby's laughing or animals playing or "hey, check out this stupid human trick."  Only to then wonder, "what was I looking for in the first place?"
  4. Who moved my keys, I know they were right here?
  5. Do you go to the grocery store for a couple things only to return with several items and then realize you didn't get the things you originally went for?
If you answered any of these yes (or all of them), or if you have already forgotten the overall theme of this blog then you probably have CRS.  Before you switch over to Facebook to see what is happening or click over to check instagram, pintrest, twitter, snap chat, etc., etc., etc., check out these Seven Steps to improving your memory.  Last night I heard a presentation from Ron White (not the comedian but a memory expert) and these were his major points to improving your memory.  Drumroll Please...
  1. Increase your exercise and activity level (I swear I'm not making this up) increasing your exercise and activity level has been shown to improve mental functioning.
  2. Better nutrition.  This guy is a genius!  Yes, this has also been shown in research.  Foods heavy in antioxidants can improve mental functioning, so can dark chocolate (just watch the added sugar on this one)
  3. Focus-Why do we have a hard time remembering peoples names?  Its because most of the time we aren't even paying attention when they say it.  In this "age of distraction" and constantly being entertained by our 'smart' devices it's no wonder we are seeing increases in CRS.
  4. File-Utilize a mental filing system to organize our mental lists or thoughts.
  5. Picture-associate a picture with what you are trying to remember and it improves retention.  The more of your senses you utilize the stronger the retention.
  6. Glue-stick the thing you are trying to remember together with the file and the picture
  7. Review-repetition is the key to improving memory, the more you review the stronger the memory will be.
So, does it actually work?  Yes, like anything it takes practice but Ron was able to remember a 50 digit unique number forward and backward utilizing his system.  Memory Improvement Training - How to Videos - YouTube  Here is a link to one of his You Tube videos, just don't get lost in there for several hours.

I think the real take home for me from this presentation were that first and foremost it is another area that improves with increased activity and better nutrition and second that we can improve any skill with a system and practice.  Don't allow poor health and 'Distraction' to make you a CRS sufferer any longer.   Put down the smart phone and walk away, Literally and go for a walk, then continue to increase your activity, feed your body the nutrients it needs to perform at its peak,  Mix in some fruits and vegetables and give your mind a break from the constant stimulation of the 'Age of Distraction' you just might realize there are people around you that you can focus on or maybe even improving yourself.  Good Luck out there.

Fat to Fit? Just Teleport!

"Beam me up, Scotty!"  Whether you are a fan of Star Trek or not, this has become one of those well know phrases.  I was never a big Star Trek fan but there was just something cool about the teleportation and how it could immediately get them from one place to another.  I really wished it existed when my family would take vacations that entailed driving several hours in the car and I still wish for it when we drive to Lake Tahoe (366 miles).  I find it interesting that when we are faced with a journey the first thing we consider is how will we get there.  We would never consider walking to Lake Tahoe unless we wanted a lot of exercise and the reality that it would take around 73 hours walking at a pace of 5 miles/hour.  We could choose a bike to speed up the time but again it would be an arduous trip and still take four times longer than driving especially hauling the luggage.  We have other options if we don't want to drive we could always take the train or fly.  While it would be great to simply teleport there, sadly that isn't an option and we realize that if we are going to get there then we have to take one of the available methods.  Each method has its pro's and con's that must be considered.  Where exactly we are headed?  How much time to we have to get there?  The amount of stuff we are taking with us, etc.   We accept this reality whenever we are going on a journey, well, at least traveling.

For some reason we refuse to accept this reality in all the other areas of our life especially our overall health. Regardless of whether we are talking about our physical, mental or spiritual health most people treat it like an episode of Star Trek.  We playing the role of the fearless James T. Kirk disregarding the logical advice of Spock only to find ourselves in a dire situation.  When all seems lost we are able to get a message to Scotty, "Beam me up!"  I don't want to be here any more and we need the quickest, easiest method to alleviate the problem, teleportation.  A perfect example is our physical health.  While it has been shown over and over again in the scientific literature the best way to stay healthy is to maintain an active lifestyle, get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods (a majority of which need to be plant based), take time to work on our relationships and also ourselves but this is all just Spock's logical musing.  We disregard this for the excitement of the adventure and then one day we realize we are in a bad situation, our health is suffering, we have gained weight and are stressed out do to a lack of sleep, poor health and failing relationships.  So we search for Scotty, we need him to beam us up out of this mess we are in.  We are desperate for the quick fix and Scotty becomes the next fad supplement or diet, the magical program that will teleport us from our current state into the one we want.  Weight loss is a $60 Billion Dollar a year business in America, so there are plenty of Scotty's our there to promise you a quick teleport to the new fit, healthy body that you are desperate for and look they have actual proof of before and after pictures to prove that they can truly teleport you.

Back to my trip to Lake Tahoe,  if I drive according to the rules (70 MPH) it will take me around 5 1/2 hours to get there.  If I break the rules, I can get there in 4 hours (90 MPH) or even 3 1/2 (100 MPH) but I put myself at a greater risk, both physically and financially.  It is no different with trying to lose weight, it is a journey of math.  A pound of fat is 3,500 calories, so in order to burn a pound of fat you must burn 3,500 calories more than you take in.  You can starve yourself or take stimulants to speed up the weight loss the same way you can speed when you are driving.  The problem is that slow and steady will win the race when it comes to our health, can we cheat?  Yes, but at what cost?  There is no teleportation when it comes to our health and the only truly sustainable plan is to change our daily habits.  We need to stop looking for Scotty to beam us up.  Star Trek was a TV show and not real (sorry Trekies) and neither is any magical claim to teleport you to immediate weight loss and good health.  It's time to listen to the logic of science and create a plan to change your daily habits.  Start walking toward the destination of improved health and you'll find you'll find a truly sustainable journey.

"There is hope to be healed, to be whole,..."

Yesterday was 'reality' Monday, as the world returned to the normal routine following a two week hiatus for the holidays. Kids returned to school, vacations ended, and New Year's Resolutions are now a week old.  Local fitness centers have filled to capacity and there are a lot of people with sore muscles and aching joints from launching full speed into their new found desire for health.  I truly hope that a majority of people stick with the their desire to make their life better in 2014 and yet sadly statistically very few will.  Why is it so hard for us human beings to change our behaviors?  Even with ever expanding access to information, albeit with a lot of misinformation, but still if we know what we need to do to improve our lives why don't we just simply do it??  As I wrote about in Life Pioneers I think it starts with understanding the major events of our lives that have shaped us.

In my role as a physical therapist I have helped thousands of people recover from injuries and surgeries and the starting point is always the same, a comprehensive evaluation to determine what the underlying issues are.  What was the mechanism of injury? When did it happen?  Was it traumatic or insidious?  What force was involved? What compensations have occurred?  Then we move into what are the losses of function, motion and strength?  I believe its the same pattern for our lives.  What if we did "Life Therapy" and asked the same questions about our current situation?  What injuries have you suffered?  When did they happen?  Were they traumatic (all at once) or insidious (overtime)?  What compensations have you created to remove the pain or limitation?  What has this cost you in lost function or ability?  Recently I was introduced to a new song called "Me" by Kendall Payne and I think it sums up it all up...

We never know what's gonna make us,
Into the people that we are.
Can't tell the toll that it will take on us,
Until the wounds have turned to scars.
We never know what's gonna break us,
When will it finally go too far?

Now would you be kind to me
If you knew my memories?
They helped you understand
Why this means everything
Why it's so hard and why I am the way I am.

'Cause there's a chance, there's a shot,
It may be small, but it's all I got.
I know it's hard now to see, but you have to believe,
That there is hope to be healed, to be whole,
To be finally free. So don't give up on me.
Please, please, don't give up on me.

The important thing to remember is that everyone has their story and each one is unique and filled with good and bad.  Life is a roller coaster of ups and downs.  The only thing that each one of us has complete control over is the choices we make.  I have been blessed to know people from the entire spectrum, from the incredibly successful to the poorest of the poor.  The one constant that I've found is that each one has their own life story and none of them are free from hard times.  The difference I have seen comes in their reaction to the different circumstances life throws at them.  Just like the lyrics of this song, "There is hope to be healed, to be whole, to be finally free. So don't give up on me."  But we need to be telling ourselves this.  If you are not where you want to be in any area of your life then realize their is someone out there who can help guide you in the right direction.  The first step is to do the evaluation, then determine what the goal is and then create the plan to get you there.  It's "Life Therapy" so "Please, please don't give up on (you)!"

Not So "Resolute"tions (7 Vital Considerations)

Happy New Year!!  The count down is on.  It is time to finalize those pesky New Year's Resolutions and set course for the best year ever.  I think that's why we like New Years so much, its out with the old and in with the new.  Our annual chance to think about all the possibilities, to dream big and to be resolute about it.  To be resolute is to be "admirably purposeful, determined, and unwavering."   Like any new task we take on we are full of excitement and know that this year will be the year.  If losing weight, getting fit and/or getting healthy are on your list then here are some keys to actually beating the odds and turning your resolution into a reality.  This morning I was asked to be on a local morning TV show to discuss resolutions, here is a little of what I covered...

1.  The only sustainable change happens by changing our behavior.
Quick fixes don't work and have never worked, at least for long.  The ultimate key to success is to change our daily habits.  If you want to get healthy then each day you must increase your amount of activity and control what you eat.  The problem is that changing our behavior is incredibly difficult.

2.  There is no magic bullet, formula or concoction,  we must control our calorie intake and increase our activity levels.
If we spent the time we spend looking for the magic formula moving we would be a lot better off.  Part of the problem we have in this "Information Age" is the rampant amount of pseudo information or outright wrong information.  "Wellness" has become a marketing term.  We are constantly bombarded by the next magical program that will transform us.  The sad part is that most will utilize some pieces of information to make them sound plausible and then are wrapped up in a slick sales pitch to get us to buy.  The 'snake oil' salesmen have been around forever and aren't going anywhere, they just keep reinventing the 'snake oil'.  If it sounds to good to be true then guess what, it is.

3.  To avoid injury you need to develop a program from your current fitness level, with gradual progressive increases.  Going 0-60 as fast as possible is a great way to get hurt and lose motivation quickly.
American's now act like Veruca Salt, from Willy Wonka, "I want it and I want it now!"  We have no patience and like the song says, "don't care how, I want it now!"  So, starting on January 2nd the gyms will fill up and everyone will take to the streets to make it happen.  Regardless, of the last time we actually did anything we will go full speed with visions of us as a model in our heads.  It doesn't matter that our bodies cannot adapt that quickly, we will force through it.  "No Pain-No Gain!!"  Becomes our mantra.  In reality, Pain=No Gain, if we really want to change our behavior and with it our health and weight causing ourselves pain is counter productive.  We are wired to avoid pain (Well most of us).  If our old habits don't cause us any discomfort then the thought of replacing them with painful ones won't go so well.  We will come up with any excuse possible to avoid the future painful situations.

4.  Finding the right intensity of activity/exercise with either HR Zone or RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) scale.

How do you know you are at the right level of exercise for your body?  Listen to it!  As long as you are not on Heart or Blood Pressure Medication you can utilize your Heart Rate.  It's simple 220-age gives you your Max Heart Rate.  When just starting out stay in the 60-70% range.  If you don't want to deal with that then use the Rate of Perceived Exertion Scale.

6  No exertion at all
7
    Extremely light (7.5)
8
9  Very light
10
11  Light
12
13  Somewhat hard
14
15  Hard (heavy)
16
17  Very hard
18
19  Extremely hard
20  Maximal exertion.

This is a scale that corresponds with heart rate and can be used by anyone even people on medications.  It has also been redone as a 0-10 scale but I like the original Borg Scale.  When starting out stay in the 11-13 range.  You win by consistently increasing your activity level, not by going all out a couple of times and then quitting.

5.  Nutrition is vital, My Plate Concept
A new simple method of controlling nutrition.  50% of your plate should be fruits and vegetables, 25% grains (potato, rice, pasta) and the remaining 25% protein.  Without proper nutrition, your body doesn't have the correct fuel to continue to run.  It is almost impossible to workout enough to 'eat whatever you want'.  So without nutrition controls you cannot meet your goals.

6.  Hydration is also key to losing weight and getting healthy.
We are chronically dehydrated!  We don't drink enough actual water and no the 64 ounce super big gulp of diet soda doesn't count.  The old 8x8 or to drink 8 glasses of water 8 times a day is actually not enough, it actually depends on, wait for it, your actual size.  The bigger you are the more you need.  Note, once again that one size doesn't fit all.  One other issue, if you drink anything like caffeine or alcohol then you need to drink even more to overcome the diuretic effects.

7.  Don't forget your Mental and Spiritual Wellness.
Take time to work on these other vital aspects of overall wellness.  Physical activity has been shown to help with Mental Wellness and performance but you need some down time to mentally recover.  In this age of distraction I think its vital to put away all the electronic devices and spend time in quiet.  Whether, it is prayer, meditation or simply just quiet time, give your mind some time each day to just be at peace without distraction.

Good luck on your journey through the upcoming year.  I hope you will make your resolution's realities this year and meet your goals.  Having a vision for what you want to make happen is the vital first step, but planning for the journey and but unless you actually start nothing will ever happen.  It is not easy to change our habits but it can be done.  If it's been a while and you need a kick start then sign up for our TERRIO LiveWell Challenge starting in January.  It is a comprehensive program of nutrition and exercise.  Also, read "Life Pioneers:  The Edge of Possibility" and explore all the possibilities for your life.

The Secret to Miraculous Weightloss...

Twas the morning of Christmas, still lying in my bed
Thoughts of my wish played in my head.
I simply asked to be skinny, how hard could that be
Come on St. Nicholas grant this for me.

The children all still sleeping was something new
But, teenagers like their sleep that much is true
Time to get up, wipe the sleep from my eyes
I’ll get up early to check, see if I got my surprise.

Stepping out of bed to the ground my pants fell
Confused for a minute, I thought ‘what the hell’?
Embarrassed I scrambled to pull them back on
I ran to the bathroom to check on this con.

I flipped on the lights and looked in the mirror
And what to my wondering eyes did appear?
My gut was gone!  A six pack in its place!!
A completely new body but still the same face.

Confused I stepped back noticing even more
Pec’s, Delt’s, Bi’s & Tri’s, I had muscles galore.
Chiseled and toned but this must be some trick
Then it dawned on me, No, it was St. Nick!

My wish he had granted!  The new skinny me!
I was a spectacle, something to see!
It happened without diets, exercise or sweat!
How simple was that, no fuss, no fret!!

I screamed so loud, I awoke everyone
I wanted them all to come on the run.
They all came running as I flexed and I posed
In their shock at the sight they just simple froze.

How? What? When? They all sputtered at one time.
It’s a Christmas miracle was my chime.
Crank up the Facebook, text and Snap Chat,
It’s time to tell the world I’m no longer Fat!!

I can’t wait to hear all the Ooo’s and the Awes.
Now get me a belt so I can hold up my drawers.
Here’s a shirt, said my son holding one up for me,
Cover this body up?  Son you must be crazy!

Of all the solutions, I’ve tried in the past
All the ‘magical’ programs, pills, potions and the fasts.
No reason for discipline, exercise or diets
The simplest solution, I asked Santa and I got it!!

They all rushed to hug me and join in my glee
Finally free from the body that had always cursed me!
Falling on the bed we all laughed and screamed,
Then my wife was shaking me, “you’re having a dream”

“Oh NO!” I screamed and jumped out of bed
My wife thought I was crazy, my face filled with dread.
I ran to the bathroom and looked in the mirror
My old body was back just as I feared!

I sprinted to the door there still was a chance
I had to catch Santa, there he was, I caught his glance.
Santa “What gives!” that’s not very nice.
Come on, make me skinny, I’ll pay any price.

“My son” he said as he turned toward me
“Your wish is not mine to give, can’t you see?
Only you can make that happen” he replied in a soft voice
“It’s all comes down to your daily choice.”

“Oh, I wish I could grant it, I really do
But it’s not something anyone has the power to give you.
It takes time to gain weight by the habits you choose,
And it takes changing those habits for you to truly lose.”

“Avoid all the nonsense, the fads and the tricks.
If you push too hard you’re sure to get sick.
Listen to me for you know that it’s true
Life is not a sprint, it's a journey and I'm rooting for you.”

He was gone in a flash and I walked through our door,
My family concerned by the expression I wore.
“Is something wrong Dad, are you Ok?” Was their plea?
I need to get health and I now know, it’s all up to me!!

Just like Santa, I wish there was a miraculous formula or a wish that I could give all of those who need to lose weight but the truth as Santa revealed is that it's all up to us as individuals.  As the old adage hold true, "if something seems to good to be true, then it probably is."   The not so simple truth is that the only real method of sustainable weight loss and improved health comes from changing our daily behaviors.  You need a complete plan that involves coming to grips with the baggage from the past and then planning out the new direction for your life journey. It all starts with you taking 100% responsibility for your decisions.  That is the reason I wrote "Life Pioneers" to share what I've learned on my journey so far and hopefully help others explore the possibility their lives hold.  I wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Years and safe travels on your life journey!!

TERRIO Therapy will be starting our next "Live Well Challenge" in January.  It is a comprehensive program I designed to help people lose weight and get healthy.  More information or Register at www.myTERRIO.com
